Instead of Buying a New House, Build an Addition

Everyone knows that the housing market isn’t at its best right now and some feel its down-right awful. People that have outgrown their current house and need more space, but can’t afford to buy a new house, are finding out that building an addition is a great alternative. It’s these house additions that are keeping the construction industry going.

If you are thinking about adding an addition to your home, now is a great time. Interest rates are low for home improvement loans, construction companies aren’t too busy, and with the slower economy the price to build a new edition may be more affordable than ever. First, you need to have a plan of what you’d like for your addition. Are you looking to add a great room or an entire second or third level? Will you need plumbing and heating or air conditioning components? These are all important questions that you need to answer before you even start looking for a reputable contractor.

Next, do some research to find a respectable contractor in your area. Ask family, friends, and neighbors who they use and look online for customer feedback. Also look at each contractor’s specialty as some are better at adding decks than adding a second floor onto a home. You want to find the perfect contractor for your specific job, and a contractor with superior customer feedback. And don’t forget to get everything in writing. You and the contractor should put together a contract and you both should sign it. Anytime something changes, update the contract and initial the changes, or create a new contract.

Because new home building is pretty slow these days, contractors have more time available and may be able to start on your project immediately, or within a two-week time period. In previous years, people would often have to wait months before a contractor could work on their project.
